LIVING with ANXIETY
Coping with anxiety on an ongoing, daily basis can be exhausting. Part of this can be attributed to negative self-talk—that critical inner voice in your head—that always seems to pop up out of nowhere, reinforcing feelings of fear, self-doubt, anger, embarrassment or guilt. In other instances you may find your negative narrator critiquing you while you are actually experiencing an event, leading you to feel anxious, self-conscious, distracted, unfocused and generally uncomfortable in social situations. This can result in avoidance of other people or situations, likely putting a big damper on your happiness, enjoyment, and social life. You may really long to make connections with others but social anxiety somehow stops you in your tracks. Perhaps you need to give a presentation at work or school but you feel held back by nervousness and fear. Anxiety may be holding you back in your career advancement and/or your important relationships. Anxiety may even be causing you to lose sleep at night, ultimately making you feel foggier and more irritable throughout the following day.
Many People
Struggle with Some Form of Anxiety Many people with anxiety frequently assume the worst outcome in any situation, despite evidence to the contrary.
While it’s normal to have “the jitters” or “butterflies” before a major public presentation, a job interview, an exam or a first date, some people experience more severe symptoms of anxiety or a feeling of dread that never seems to lift. Many of these individuals suffer for years before seeking any help. Sometimes people feel embarrassed or ashamed about having anxiety and thus instead suffer in silence. In the long run, fear and worry about the future —and your negative narrator— can get in the way of living the life you want, prevent you from challenging yourself in new situations and diminish your potential in many areas of your life.
If it feels like anxiety is getting in the way of your life, it may be time to seek out help. The good news is that when you work with an experienced therapist, you can learn how to recognize and alleviate your overwhelming symptoms and prevent future stress from holding you back in life. I would like to help.
